Course Flier Project

Course Flier

We decided on laser-cutting the course flier to let folks know that the course exists.  This blog will also serve as an example of "transparent documentation" that we'll use throughout the course.  Every project should document the process, design files, and of course provide pictures of the project.

First Pass - proof of concept

The first iteration was to check to see if images of "made stuff" would even print well on cardboard.  This proved that they do engrave well and are visible.
Cost: $0 for material, $1.67 for 10 minutes of design time, $10 for 10 minutes of cut time on the Zing.  Total $11.67

Second Iteration - add some content

Now that it looks like we can generate reasonable artwork, we designed the basic flier.
This has information on it like time/how to sign up/location/etc.

Cost: $0 for material, $20 for 2 hours of figuring out course logistics (should this count against the flier design time?  Not sure), and $0 for machine time.

Third Iteration - put into a better form-factor

Now that we had content, we had to make it more cool than a rectangle.  It was run by a few focus groups, pared down a bit, then the google doc was exported as a PDF and imported into Illustrator, and finally sent to be cut out on the Zing.

Cost:
  • Material: 8" x 10" of cardboard
  • Labor: $20 for 2 hours of design work
  • Machine Time: $20 for 2 hours on the Zing

Mass Production

Finally, we are asked to estimate the cost of producing a bunch of our projects - 100 to be precise.  We didn't make that many, but did generate a dozen or so of them.  It took about 10 minutes for each to cut out.
Cost:
  • Material: 8x10x100 = 8000 in^2 of cardboard = 55 sq ft = $0
  • Labor: $160 for 16 hours babysitting the Zing.
  • Machine Time: $160 for 16 hrs on the Zing.
Total - $320 for 100, or $3.20 each.
