Sean Farrell HW 2 | Tote Box Design

One of the things I have been designing in Trinity's Problem's in Engineering course is a tote box of sorts. When I was first given this design problem I had no idea what I wanted to make. I began experimenting with different all extrusion and designs until I came up with the current design shown in Fig.1. So you may be wondering what the heck am I going for here..... in my mind its a type of crate tote box. The user will be able to grab the top no matter which direction it is orientated, the lower side slits will have a shoulder strap going through them, and the side compartments will be useful in holding small items.

The complete design is in Fusion 360.

The sketches for my tote box are shown in Fig. 2-5. As you can see in Fig.3 the width of the box is 8" while the length is 12". I used these dimensions because I though this would serve as a comfortable size for carrying. I made the two side compartments 1.5" in order to hold smaller tools such as screw drives or maybe a water bottle. In Fig. 4 you can see that I made the hand holds 0.5" in diameter and 6" wide. I used this size because I believe they would provide more then enough room for grabbing the box easily. I also made the box 6" high because I figured this would be a good size for most tool items. Lastly in Fig. 5 I show that for engraving my name into the front of the box I will be using 0.09" wide spacing. I think that this size will be large enough to see, but I am absolutely certain I want to cut my name all the way through the box wall.

Looking at my design I have also been thinking about converting it into an ice chest. I would not engrave my name all the way through but instead would add insulation, a plastic tube, and a lid to the center 7"x 7" compartment. Just an idea at the moment...please let me know what you think and stay tuned for more pictures later on.
