HW #2: Laser Cut Bracelet: Nathan Richter

For the homework #2 I decided to design and laser cut a wearable bracelet. I thought about a couple of materials but an the end I settled on wood because I though it would have a nice feel to it and present a challenge in its design and construction. I also settled on 0.2" thickness since the wood we have available in the shop has a glossy finish on it which resists additional burning from the laser. At the same time, this thickness gives the bracelet the necessary strength to be worn without worry. The bracelet itself is made of a series of hexagonal pieces which are connected via links. There was a limit to how small I could make these links, since they had to accommodate the thickness of the wood, while also retaining the required strength. HW #2: Cube Trivets - Luc Scranton

For homework 2, I initially wanted to make a comb engraved with my initials on it, but this project took all of 10 minutes to make, so I decided I wanted to do something else that would be more of a challenge. Below is a picture of the comb... I came across a cool cube pattern for some trivets at https://community.glowforge.com/c/free-laser-designs which I adapted to make two trivets. In the first photo, you see the frame cut out with all the diamond shaped pieces that fit inside it. I initially wanted to cut this design with three different pieces of wood to fit back into one frame in a unique patter. However, after cutting out the pattern in the first two pieces, maplewood and hardboard, I found that using a two color pattern with the light and dark contrast really brought out the three dimensional feel. I also thought it would be cool to go with the two colors so that I could make two pieces that were opposites. Since the maplewood is a preset material on the Glowforge...

I started making the tote based off of material readily available. Practically all of the pieces seen in model are based off of a single cut with the miter saw. Of course shaping the middle pieces took more work, but each component only required a single miter saw cut. The first piece that I tried to shape was the middle handle piece, since I thought getting the grip was going to be the trickiest part. I was kind of right in the sense that I had to redo it since I completely underestimated the size of a human hand. I tried to expand the slot with the jigsaw but the shape wasn't coming out as I expected it to...it was not completely straight, the ply was chipping off, and it looked as if the circles didn't meet the tangent of...
